What is Fall Into Fitness?
Background
In early 2007, a number of Mid-Michigan interests came together to plan a special weekend in the mid-Michigan area that would focus on health and fitness. The full weekend of events would be organized under the umbrella “Fall Into Fitness,” and would include a number of spectator events, competitive events, interactive events with local sports teams, and an expo.
Partners planning the weekend included the Lansing Entertainment and Public Facilities Authority in partnership with the Greater Lansing Sports Authority, Healthy & Fit Magazine, Impression Five Science Center and other numerous non-profit organiztions.
Sponsored by Ingham Regional Medical Center and WLNS TV-6, as well as Accident Fund and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, the first Fall Into Fitness weekend was offered on September 29-30, 2007.
The weekend featured:
- The Capital City River Run 5K and Half Marathon taking runners along the River Tail beginning at the Lansing Center and continuing through the MSU campus and Scott Woods.
- A Fat Tire (bicycle) Crit around the Capitol for all levels of ability from recreational riders to the competitive racers
- The Smile Mile Kids Run (ages 12 and under)
- The Slime Dash (ages 7 and under)
- Michigan State University teams, including men’s and women’s basketball, softball, baseball, hockey, crew, and the MSU triathlon club, demonstrating their sports and interacting with the public, followed by spending time in the Expo signing autographs
- Community interactive events
- A motivational speaker, elite runner Dick Beardsley, sponsored by New Balance
- An inexpensive carb buffet dinner for runners and the public
The Healthy and Fit Magazine Expo was offered Saturday, in the Lansing Center, to bring together individuals, businesses and events to celebrate the exciting new health and fitness awareness in mid-Michigan. The Expo offered free admission, and featured 94 health-related businesses and services, a demonstration stage offering interactive demonstrations such as gymnastics, Jazzercise, cardio hip-hop, weight lifting, fencing, etc.), and a giant inflated Tiki Head climbing wall for kids.
2008 Fall Into Fitness Weekend
